May 4-8, 2009
Presented by the UCSD Taiwan Studies Lecture Series
The University of California, San Diego Taiwan Studies Lecture Series is proud to present a festival of recent films from Taiwan. Each evening, from Monday May 4th – Friday May 8th, a documentary and feature film will be screened on the UCSD campus. The event is free and open to the public.
On Friday, May 8th, the event will culminate with the attendance of Director Tom Shu-Yu Lin who will be visiting from Taiwan in order to present his 2008 film Winds of September. Following the screening of Winds of September there will be a question and answer session moderated by Yingjin Zhang, UCSD Professor of Modern Chinese Literature, Cinema and Media Studies and James Wicks, a final-year Ph.D. student currently teaching an undergraduate course on Taiwan Films.
The UCSD Taiwan Film Festival is sponsored by the UCSD Taiwan Studies Lecture Series, which is made possible by an endowment from the Taiwanese American community in San Diego, including the Taiwanese American Foundation of San Diego. The endowment was initiated by Distinguished University Professor and director of the Center for Behavioral Genomics of the UCSD School of Medicine, Ming T. Tsuang, and Associate Dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering, Charles W. Tu.
Expenses for the festival are also partially supported by the Government Information Office in Taiwan through the Press Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles.
The event will kick off with a reception from 5:30 – 6-30 pm on Monday May 4th. Please join us as we showcase the current state of Taiwan film, art, and culture in conjunction with Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and Taiwanese American Heritage Week.
